History
Johnson & Johnson has been at the forefront of innovation and technological
excellence for more than a century. The history of McNeil Products Limited begins in the
UK in 1983 when Janssen Pharmaceutical Limited formed the Janssen Pharmacy Healthcare.
Janssen Pharmacy Healthcare was formed following the switch of loperamide from
POM to P and the introduction of Imodium™.
During the 1980s, Janssen Pharmacy Healthcare switched more medicines from
POM to P than any other OTC company and in addition to Imodium™, launched
a number of brands including Stugeron™, Daktarin™, and Ovex™.
In 1995 Janssen Pharmacy Healthcare merged with Centra Health Care, a 50/50
joint venture company owned by Johnson & Johnson and Merck, Sharpe and Dohme.
The Centra Health Care joint venture company was renamed Johnson & Johnson.MSD
Consumer Pharmaceuticals in 1996 with a key focus to capitalise on the growing
trend for switching prescription only medicines to pharmacy sale.
In total McNeil Products Limited and its predecessors have now switched 12 medicines
from prescription only to OTC, more than any other company. We shall continue
to seek to develop new and innovative solutions and services to better meet
consumer healthcare needs.
