Key Symptoms

Dandruff is a very common condition; approximately 40% of the population suffer at sometime in their lives. Symptoms may include white flaky scales on the scalp, dry or greasy hair or an itchy scalp.

What causes it?

Clinical research has shown that a dry, itchy scalp (otherwise known as dandruff) occurs when the natural balance of yeast on the scalp is disrupted. Normally, as dead skin cells are shed, they would be washed or brushed away without a trace. However, this imbalance of yeast accelerates the production and shedding of skin cells, leading to a dry, flaking scalp condition. This could be due to factors such as climate change, hormonal changes and stress.

How to treat your dandruff

We would recommend brushing your hair regularly to loosen flakes and stimulate blood supply to the scalp. It may be a good idea to avoid mousse, hairspray and instruments such as heated hair straighteners. Although regular washing will help to control the pH balance of the skin and limit the risk of dandruff, we would suggest that you use a shampoo such as Nizorelle Dandruff Control Shampoo for milder dandruff.

For more moderate types of dandruff try Nizoral® anti-dandruff shampoo, available in a 60ml bottle, or for severe dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis, Nizoral® dandruff shampoo, available in a 100ml bottle over the counter in pharmacies can be used.

Nizorelle Dandruff Control Shampoos can be purchased from Boots and large Sainsbury's.
