The maximum daily dose is one 10mg tablet daily. Zocor Heart-Pro® should be taken in the evening because that is when your liver makes the majority of cholesterol.
Zocor Heart-Pro® starts to work on reducing cholesterol levels right away. After four weeks, your bad cholesterol level should drop by around 27%. Zocor Heart-Pro® must be taken on a long-term basis to reduce your risk of a heart attack by about a third.
Of course, you can't see inside your arteries, but following four to six weeks of taking one tablet daily of Zocor Heart-Pro®, your bad (LDL) cholesterol should be reduced by around 27%.
In order for you to maintain a lower cholesterol level, you should continue to take Zocor Heart-Pro® everyday on a long-term basis. If you stop taking the tablets, your cholesterol levels are likely to go back up and therefore your risk of a heart attack will increase.
Zocor Heart-Pro® can be taken by individuals up to the age of 70. If you are older than 70, you are likely to be at higher risk of CHD and should visit your GP for advice.
Like all medicines, Zocor Heart-Pro® may occasionally cause side effects in some people. The most common side effects are stomach upsets (such as sickness, stomach pain, constipation, diarrhoea, and flatulence (wind)), rash, itchiness, weakness, headache or indigestion. The following have also occurred: hair loss, dizziness, abdominal pain, tingling and numbness, abnormal blood test results for liver and muscle function.
Rarely, a few patients have experienced the following: liver disease (e.g., yellowing of the skin or whites of your eyes, dark coloured urine), muscle disease (aches and pains) which can be severe, or an allergic reaction. The allergic reaction may include: swelling of the face or neck, muscle and joint pains, joint and blood vessel inflammation, itchy, lumpy rash (hives, nettle rash), a high temperature, flushing, difficulty in breathing, or tiredness.
If any of these happen to you, or you have any other unusual symptoms or feelings, stop taking the tablets and contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
If you are at moderate risk of CHD, reducing your LDL cholesterol level will reduce your risk of CHD, whatever your starting level. For this reason, it is not necessary to know the initial level of cholesterol in your blood. However, it can be helpful to know your baseline level to see your progress while taking Zocor Heart-Pro®. If you measure your cholesterol either before or within the first few days of treatment with Zocor Heart-Pro®, you will best be able to see your improvement over time.
Always ask your pharmacist. Read the leaflet. Contains simvastatin.
